ABOUT

Erica Wong Ping Lun is a female Canadian composer for film, TV, and video games, known for her melodic, instrumental scores to award-winning animations and indie dramas that have been showcased in national and international film festivals. Erica trained professionally as a flautist and often incorporates this melodic instrument into her scores to capture elements of whimsy and wonder. Her scoring credits include the adventure/fantasy LES FLEURS DE PRINTEMPS, which was awarded Best Animation Film at the CEGEP du Vieux Montréal Gala and premiered at Festival Fantasia, the playful coming-of-age drama ÉCLAIRCIE, and the science fiction L’ANATOMIE DU TEMPS.

Erica won Best Sound at the Ontario International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Sound Design in a Canadian Feature 2021 for her work on the feature film, THE PETRICHOR, which was also awarded Best Feature Film at numerous festivals. The animated film THE OCEAN DUCK, for which she edited the audio and worked on the sound design, was Academy Award-Qualifying, won both the Best of the South Award ASIFAC-South Animation Festival and the Jury Award at the New York International Children’s Film Festival 2022, and was presented at other festivals such as the San Francisco International Film Festival 2022 and the Austin Film Festival 2021.

Classically trained, Erica was part of the orchestration team for the Bollywood feature film, MERI NIMMO, assisted on the music production side of the National Film Board of Canada’s feature documentary, LUBEN AND ELENA, and performed flute on both the web series, PET PURAN, and the title song O Kala for the feature film by the same name O KALA. She also wrote additional music for the documentary LE SON AU BOUTS DES PATTES and both composed additional music and co-composed an original song for the film noir RACIAL IDIOCRACY.

In 2021, Erica was selected internationally to participate as an auditor in the Los Angeles Film Conducting Intensive Workshop with Angel Velez, Conrad Pope, and Booker White. She was also one of the top ten participants out of over 200 applicants for the SOCAN Screen Music Laboratory for Emerging Composers (2021) where she worked with Pascal Plante and Janal Bechthold. She has a Master of Arts in Composition of Music for Film and Television from the University of Bristol (England) and a Bachelor of Music from McGill University (Canada).

"Sound is 51% of my films, so you can imagine how particular I can get when it comes to their score. Anna is an experimental piece that portrays a woman's grief throughout the seasons, so it needed someone who can encapsulate the brightness of summer before transitioning into the early colder notes of autumn, and ending with the cold heaviness of winter, all while maintaining the grief that comes with the film. It is not an easy task and Erica came onboard with it with both an open heart and mind, being so willing to work with me until it was just right. She is also a multi-talented powerhouse and gave me options experimenting with different instruments, which I really appreciated. Being able to collaborate with a fellow Asian female creative also meant a lot to me, and I am so grateful that Erica came onboard our little film."
